Black Panther has successfully proven that a movie with a predominant star-cast of blacks cannot just turn into a cultural phenomenon but can also be a smash at the box office.
Recently, it added one more feather to its hat after the nominations for the Academy Awards 2019 were announced. The Marvel Studios’ epic has now become the first ever superhero movie that for receiving a nomination for Best Picture. It is redefining how comic books films are usually regarded when it comes to classic film-making appraisal.
The nomination didn’t come as a surprise as Black Panther has already received immense recognition from the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Golden Globes, and the Writers Guild, the Producers Guild as well as the Screen Actors guild.
However, the Oscars are a whole new level of honour indeed. Another landmark moment for the film is that it’s nominated alongside movies such as Vice, A Star is Born, The Favourite and Roma.

Carter) and Best Original Song ( SZA and Kendrick Lamar’s ‘All the Stars’).
Even though it is yet an underdog for the grand prize, still it would not be a shocker seeing the film bag few golds at the 91st Academy Awards which is to be aired on February 24th, Friday on ABC.
Black Panther surely deserves such recognition and appeal. It is a cultural milestone for and is the third highest grossing domestic movie of all times which has made a whopping $700,059,566. The film has connected with a historically under-represented demographic without pandering have successfully to maintained a huge appeal. This has made it recognized by the Academy and it is not your usual comic-book blockbuster. It is a masterpiece indeed. One might debate that the cultural relevance played a major role in the film bagging a nomination more than the actual quality, but the nomination further opens up the interpretation as to what the actual definition of the Best Picture is.
