Clicking Selfies Is A Mental Disorder, Confirms A Study How Many Have You Clicked Today?

Clicking selfies has been officially termed to be quite close to having a mental disorder. We’re not used to the amount of attention we’re bringing to ourselves. It used to be that we would take pictures of the things we love, admire and cherish. Now it’s like everyone’s trying new filters, taking lots of self-portraits and posting them with captions that are unrelated.

How often have you seen an Instagram post with a beautiful bombshell taking a bikini pic with a title that says – “The cosmic consciousness will align with the natural self” #bikini #glambod? Like what are you talking about lady? Who knows what they get from all these selfies and bikini pics? No one is watching except for guys between the ages of 13-21.

Cultural phenomenon

Clicking selfies has also become so pervasive in our lives that we aren’t able to enjoy a moment correctly if we haven’t used a good filter. But to be honest, if you visit a place that’s dope and expensive, you want to flex a little bit for your friends. You want to start new conversations and enjoy your time there.

Alright, so all kidding aside there’s a researcher in India who’s made this famous claim. Researchers at Nottingham Trent University in the UK and the Thiagarajar School of Management (TSM) in Tamil Nadu studied around 400 people. They realized that many of them were taking as many as 4-5 selfies a day and posting them on their social media. It became like a compulsion for many of them, who couldn’t disconnect from the virtual world.

They called the condition – “Chronic selfitis”, which is when someone posts more than 6 selfies a day.

There isn’t any other research that backs it up, so it could all be BS, but it’s an interesting conversation starter. At 6 selfies a day, you’re taking 6 x 365 = 2190 selfies a year. That’s a lot of selfies that revolve around you.

Why did these people take so many selfies?

Well, that’s because they had low self-confidence and they were finding a brighter future by getting more likes. Some of them even bought followers to boost their engagement. They wanted to be the best at this point less competition and become more relevant in this space.

It was mainly done to improve their moods, which is when they would desire to click and share. They would even get ready in the morning, take a selfie and then remove all that makeup to go back to sleep. It was like they were possessed with taking selfies all day.

There’s also the element of how many selfies they were taking. If it was an incredibly stressful day, then they would take more selfies and post them. If they wanted to be aloof, they’d take less. It was like they were managing their self-worth from selfies. This was why they called it – Selfitis.

How many selfies are you taking?

If you’re looking at everything you do as a chance to take a good selfie, then you might be overdoing it. If you’re taking a selfie only because you think it’ll improve your fan base, then you’re doing it wrong as well.

If you’re taking selfies with friends and family members, but only the ones that look cute – e.g. babies or cousins – then you’re not really 100% there. If you’re taking selfies because it’s cool to take them, then that might be adding to a lot of the stress accumulated.

Ideally, you want to be able to enjoy taking selfies and have a great time doing so. Do it with friends, families, and heck – go outside and take them. Don’t be at home taking millions of selfies trying to see where you look good and where you don’t.

That’s the worst way to take a stab at your own self and be critical about the things that don’t matter. You also end up seeing new ways to lower your worth and you’re never going to be completely happy with what you’re doing.

Being happy without technology

That’s the main point here, that you can be increasingly happy without technology as well. Instead of WhatsApp and Facebook, you can meet people in real life and make plans to do nothing. You can create new adventures and find new things you like doing by disconnecting.

There’s also the element of doing something new and different, self-healing and taking more control over what you eat and drink. The more quality sleep you get, the better it is for your body as well.

You can do so much without technology constantly being there around you and you can have a great time doing the things you love doing.
